More record breaking beads - flying flags for beads

In Abu Dhabi, Jeyaraman Ravi has made a large beaded flag in honor of his adopted country – the United Arab Emirates. He believes that he has made the largest beaded flag in the world and he has been successful in getting the Guiness Book of Records to create a new category for him as a result. Jeyaraman’s flag is yet to be certified as the winner in the category but with the following facts and figures I wish him luck:
o Number of beads he has used: 288,400
o The size of the finished flag: 3 metres long and 1.5 metres wide
o Time taken to complete the flag: About eight hours over 14 months.
o Weight of the flag: 10 kilogram
o Amount of thread used to make the flag: 850 grams.

Any beaders tempted to make their own flag can find free flag patterns for flags of a more modest size at:
o http://familycrafts.about.com/library/bdspins/blbdspinflags.htm

For those interested in the meanings of colours the flag’s Pan-Arab colors red, green, white and black, colors apparently symbolise Arab unity. One alternative explanation is that the green represents fertility; the white represents neutrality, and its black represents its oil. A second alternative is that the white represents peace and honesty, the red is for bravery and valour, green for hope and joy and its black for determination.

Beading tales and trivia - record breaking beads

I'm not sure what the longest piece bracelet is that you have ever seen but can you believe an 80 metre long 'bracelet'. It's true! Alayna Salter a UK designer and musician strung 80 metres of beads into the world's longest 'bracelet' and in doing so broke the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest chain of beads! (6 Jan 2008) I didn't even know that there was such a record until I stumbled upon it yesterday. Alayna reportedly said, '“If you’re brave and have a great idea, use your initiative and just go for it”.

For those of you considering going for the record the minimum length of chain required to enter is 50 metres (or 164 ft for those still working with inches and feet). If you do decide to try do let me know. Or you may prefer to try the record for the largest number of beads in a mosaic. You would have to create one with more than 18,231 beads. This was what the last reported record holder I could find ( Reem Al Gurg (UAE), Dubai) managed in 2007.

Do you have any beading records? Know of any in your local community? I'd love to hear about them.

Beading tips competition winner

Thanks for all the great tips about how to organise my beads. I found a good idea in each one. Sarah I love the idea of re-using baby food jars but unfortunately no babies in site. Plano boxes for fellow beaders in the US are clearly popular and after Googling them I now know what they are. Finding something to organise beading in front of the TV at night is also a quest I am on - I'll post a picture of my solution that is working well currently.

I've decided that the Autumn beads should go to Ginja Girl Designs for bringing her ideas to l ife with the photo on her blog.

Watch out for my next bead stash giveaway on next Monday.

For me today, its more bead organising - progress is slow, but there is progress!

Cheers
Glenda

Getting to Know the Artist

Glenda was kind enough to answer a few questions so we can all explore her work more closely.

Hazelnut Cove: Hi Glenda, for those who haven’t visited your shop yet, what type of things do you make?

Glenda: Handwoven beaded jewellery that is made from thousands of tiny seed beads.

Hazelnut Cove
: You do a wonderful job! How did you get started in this beautiful, intricate artform?

Glenda: My mother brought me some beads to make a pair of earrings for myself – now ten years later I have a cupboard full and am selling to others.

Hazelnut Cove: Isn’t it great when you stumble onto something you truly love doing? So, do you have a favorite material to work with? Link here to find out what I said.

One Lovely Blog Award for Dax Designs

Thanks to Hazelnut Cove for passing me the One Lovely Blog Award originated by Jennuine Candles.

About the One Lovely Blog Award

The One Lovely Blog Award is passed from blogger to blogger, going to those whom you’ve newly discovered and who make you feel at home.

Here are the guidelines taken from Hazelnut cove:

  • Once you’ve been given the award, accept it by posting it on your blog, along with the name and link to the person who recognized you with it.
  • The next step is to pass the award on. The exact number of blogs you should pass it on to seems to vary. I was not able to find the originator of the award to be sure; but, the general consensus seems to be between 7 and 15.
  • Finally, be sure to leave a comment for the bloggers you’ve chosen, letting them know that you think they have “One Lovely Blog.”.

So, who to pass this treasure along to? I'm just beginning that process. Here's my first treasure pass

  • Artful living on the bluff - http://artfullivingonthebluff.blogspot.com/ for her lovely Jar of Jewelry story. Stop by and read it.

  • Roseworks Treasury http://roseworkstreasury.blogspot.com/2009/08/bead-flowers-by-etsy-bead-weavers.html for showcasing the talents of Etsy Beadweavers who make flowers.

Beads in your dreams - what does it all mean?

Did you know that beads appear in dream interpretation guides. In Ten Thousand Dreams Interpreted by Gustavus Hindman Miller dreaming about beads can mean that you are about to be noticed by those more powerful than you. It's not clear whether or not that is a good thing but stringing them certainly is. It means rewards from those richer than you are on the way. Counting beads in your dreams is definitely a good omen. You will have joy, calmness and contentment in your life. However, as all beaders know scattering beads brings neither. In your dreams, it can mean you are about to loose favour with those around you. For Jungian's round beads symbolize balance and harmony and suggest the foundations are being layed for success and balance in life. So, as in our waking moments beads in our dreams can bring joy, success, balance, harmony, attention and good fortune but just don't drop them!

Of course, these guides to dream interpretation are just for fun, not guides for decision-making in your life.
